Not all workers have access to maternity leave and even fewer are entitled to paid maternity leave. The ASU is campaigning on this issue to try to redress the balance.
In the absence of a national paid maternity leave scheme (something which will materialise soon, hopefully) women only have access to this condition if it has been won through negotiations with their employer.
The ASU has published a guide on how to put paid maternity leave on the enterprise bargaining table (download link below). "Paid Maternity Leave: Everyone Benefits" provides information to equip you to deal with the usual arguments raised against paid maternity leave.
If you don't have paid maternity leave in your workplace and you are just about to embark on enterprise bargaining, make sure you and the employee representatives on the bargaining unit have a copy of this guide!
