Dispute to be heard by Fair Work Australia on Canon subcontracting to CSG Communications Pty Ltd
A dispute has been lodged with Fair Work Australia regarding the transmission of Technicians from Canon Australia Pty Ltd to CSG Communications Pty Ltd (CSG). The meeting primarily focussed on the tabling and explanation of our detailed claims for this EBA which included the presentation of draft EBA clauses to further explain the Claim endorsed by ASU members. Pan Africa ILGA joins all our global human rights organizations and especially the Malawian organization the Center for the Development of People (CEDEP) in condemning the conviction and harsh sentencing of 14 years imprisonment with hard labour by a Magistrate Court in Blantyre, Malawi of Tiwonge ("Tionge") Chimbalanga and Steven Monjeza for "unnatural offences" and "indecent practices between males" under Sections 153 and 156 of the Malawi Penal Code. 24 May 2010 [full story]
Women’s wage trails even further in 2010 - Equal Pay Day is September 4
The gender pay gap in Australian businesses has widened according to Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) figures released last week. ABS data shows that women’s average weekly earnings are now 82% of men’s, meaning that since this time last year the gap has widened by 0.8 of a percentage point. As a result of this pay gap, Australian women will have to work an extra 66 days than men to earn the same amount as men. 24 May 2010 [full story]

Good regional jobs and properly funded local services will solve Australia’s regional skills shortage
The ASU recently lodged a federal submission on the issue of skills shortages in regional Australia contending that people will relocate to regional communities for jobs with good pay and conditions supported by communities with properly funded local services. These skills shortages are currently having a dire effect on local government and public services in many parts of regional Australia, resulting in a downwards spiral. A lift in union membership in the past year shows working Australians are turning to unions to improve their pay and conditions. Canon Agreement approved
Fair Work Australia (FWA) has approved the Canon Australia (Technical Consultants) Collective Agreement 2009. FWA approved the Agreement on Friday 16 April 2010 after seeking an undertaking from the employer that the clauses relating to right of entry and union rights were in accordance with the Fair Work Act. Late in the day of 18 March, the Ankara High Criminal Court in Turkey declared Tümer guilty of belonging to an illegal Kurdish organization, and “making propaganda” through participation in public demonstrations, and sentenced her to more than seven years in prison. ASU National Office audited accounts, financial statements and operating report
The Workplace Relations Act (now known as the Fair Work Act) requires that the financial affairs of unions are checked and audited every 12 months to make sure union funds are administered properly and to detect any shortcomings. Employment Services: not just a job is an Employment Service Worker Reconnection project which is undertaken by the ASU with funding from the Australian Government Department of Education, Employment and Workplace Relations (DEEWR). All Qantas employees will be aware of the company’s proposal to introduce urine testing for drugs and alcohol – and your unions’ campaign against it. A recent case by a Full Bench of the Australian Industrial Relations Commission (AIRC) determined that saliva testing is a better and fairer way than urine testing. Since Day 1 of our campaign almost 5 years ago, we urged Qantas to use saliva testing not urine testing. Federal Government moves to fix problems with modern Clerks Award after ASU campaign
The ASU welcomes the variation to the award modernisation request issued by Workplace Relations Minister Julia Gillard. The variation singles out the problems with the decisions of the AIRC in relation to the modern Clerks Private Sector Award. If left to continue, the AIRC decisions would have savagely reduced the safety net and take home pay of office workers around the country. Justice at last – pay recognition for Queensland SACS workers
In an historic decision, with significant national implications, the Queensland Industrial Relations Commission (QIRC) ruled late yesterday that the work of social and community services workers in Queensland had been undervalued and that wage adjustment to the Queensland Community Services and Crisis Assistance State Award was needed to remedy this situation. GFC hits Qantas: 1750+ redundancies on way
On Tuesday 14th April 2009 Qantas announced to the stock exchange and then to Australia their intention to, among other things, cut flying capacity by 5% resulting in the loss of 500 management positions and a further 1250 equivalent full time positions (FTEs) from areas of the Group. Update on Qantas redundancies
On Friday 18th July 2008 Qantas announced their intention to cut 1,500 jobs across the Group by December 2008. Despite this announcement we have been unable to get exact details of which areas will be hit by job cuts, instead we have been told by Qantas management that the ASU will be involved in a series of meetings with the Group General Managers of Human Resources for each of the business segments to get an indication of where they believe the job cuts will come from. 28 July 2008 [full story]

Casuals are no solution to the chaos at Qantas Telephone Sales
This week the Manager of Telephone Sales in Hobart boldly issued a memo to staff suggesting that she will be recruiting ex staff to work as casuals during July 2008. What she failed to realize is that Qantas has an EBA and agreement about how casuals can be engaged and this clearly states that an agreement with the ASU must be reached before casuals are engaged. Partial victory for Working Women’s Centres – the fight goes on for Queensland

Members employed by Ergon, Energex and Powerlink will be holding a 24-hour strike from 6:00am this coming Wednesday 14th May 2008 to 6:00am the next morning. But the authorities now accuse him of "communicating with those outside prison for the purposes of issuing messages of solidarity". Amnesty International and the International Trade Union Confederation (ITUC) are waging a global campaign to demand his freedom. Tax Office ruling rocks Victorian community health centres
The Victorian Hospitals' Industrial Association (VHIA) and the Victorian Healthcare Association (VHA) have received advice from the Australian Tax Office (ATO) regarding the status of community health centres in Victoria. This advice confirms a past ruling that the government control of community health centres means they can be characterised as government organisations, and so they are unable to be charitable or benevolent institutions. Workplace fatalities make national focus on OH&S a priority
