Tasmanian ASU identities help shape ALP future24 August 2006Sean Kelly, Secretary of the ASU Tasmanian Branch, was elected to the position of ALP Tasmanian President recently. Former Industrial Officer of the Tassie ASU Branch, Catryna Bilyk, has also won preselection to the number three spot on the ALP Senate ticket. These positions recognise Sean and Catryna's efforts in relation to Tasmanian working people. ASU Branch Secretary elected to Tasmanian ALP PresidencyOn being elected, Sean said, "This is a great opportunity to support the continued development of stability in the ALP in Tasmania, whilst providing positive and supportive leadership for ALP members from all Branches and affiliated unions in Tasmania."
This new role for Sean will mean a higher profile for the concerns of ASU members and will thus complement his role as Tasmanian Branch Secretary.
ASU National Secretary, Paul Slape, congratulated Sean on his election to the ALP position and said, "Given the current Federal Government's hostility toward ordinary people through its new workplace laws, it is important that unionists like Sean take a leading role in the ALP, our partner in ensuring a fairer future for all Australians." As a former Victorian President of the ALP, Paul recognises the opportunities this position creates to advance the interests of workers for trade unionists who are elected to it. ASU member joins Tassie ALP Senate team for next Federal electionASU member and former official, Catryna Bilyk, was also recently awarded the number three position on the ALP Senate ticket. At the next Federal election, Catryna will be a vital part of the team effort toward breaking the Coalition's stranglehold on the Federal Senate majority. In so doing, we hope the Upper House returns to its proper role as the house of review and maintaining checks and balances on the Government of the day. Paul Slape said, "The ASU is very pleased that Catryna Bilyk will be part of the ALP Senate team in the next election. Catryna has a proven track record of representing the interests of working people through her work in the ASU so we are confident that she will continue to do so in the Senate." Catryna began her involvement in the ASU as a shop steward in the child care industry and ultimately progressed to a position as Industrial Officer in the Branch. She has also held the position of ALP National Vice President. Currently, Catryna is a ministerial advisor in the Tasmanian Government.
