GeneralDon't let John Howard get away with it, enrol to vote now!11 September 2007By the ASU - fighting for your rights at work We all know that when the Howard Government got control of the Senate, they arrogantly ignored community opinion and rammed through WorkChoices. They also sneakily took the opportunity to do something equally undemocratic and unfair - changing the Electoral Act to try to stop people who don't like their policies from voting. If John Howard calls an election today and you're not enrolled correctly by 8pm tonight, you will miss out! Get all the information you need to check your enrolment and enrol to vote here: http://www.rightsatwork.com.au/campaigns/enroltovote It used to be that you had seven days to get on the electoral roll after an election was called. But now, the Howard Government has changed the laws so that nobody will be able to enrol after 8pm on the day the election is called. If you want to have your say at the election, you have to be enrolled and you have to be enrolled now. Limiting people's vote in this fashion would seem bizarre until you look closely at why the Liberal Government has done it. The Electoral Commission estimates that some 30% of people between the ages of 18 - 25 aren't on the roll. These young people will experience the brunt of Howard's IR laws for the rest of their working life if he gets elected again. Last federal election, more than 420,000 updated their enrolment after the election was called, with nearly 80,000 new voters. Thanks to John Howard, we won't get that chance this time around. Ask yourself this - would the Liberal Government have changed the electoral laws if the majority of people not enrolled were investment bankers, millionaires and big business people? No way! We simply can't let them get away with this. Make sure you are enrolled to vote, and help your friends and family do the same. Further information can be found on the ASU enrol to vote campaign page: http://www.asu.asn.au/campaigns/vote.html Don't let John Howard take away your rights at work - or your democratic voice. Enrol to vote now.
