We can end poverty by telling the politicians it’s what we want!

10 October 2008

Anti-Poverty Week is next week: 12-18 October 2008

Australian unions including the ASU support and participate in activities during Anti-Poverty Week (APW) not only because we support social justice, but because we know that poverty both in Australia and around the world is closely related to workers' rights. APW was established in Australia as an expansion of the United Nation's annual International Anti-Poverty Day on October 17. We encourage all our members and friends to do a little to end poverty by getting involved!

If you only do one thing, do this…

Print off the poster you can download below and put it up around your workplace or print off the brochure and hand it around. The anti-poverty campaign is about raising awareness.

If you want to do a little more, here’s how

The success of Anti-Poverty Week depends on individual people and organisations taking action to organise an activity with friends, colleagues or other groups. Any activity, large or small, that helps people to express their interest and concern about any aspect of local, national or global poverty is very welcome.

Some activities are organised by welfare and health organisations, religious groups, community organisations schools and youth groups. But many other types of organisations also arrange activities, including government departments, local councils, business organisations, universities and sporting and cultural groups.

You can find out about scheduled activities here: http://www.antipovertyweek.org.au/events.php

In recent years, activities have included:

  • lectures, debates, workshops and conferences
  • letters to newspapers, petitions, surveys and publications
  • open days, walks, rallies, sleep outs, film nights and concerts
  • advice and training sessions, exhibitions and information stalls
  • meal services, fund-raisers and religious services
  • competitions, award presentations and school projects

They have been held in a very wide range of places, including:

  • parliament houses, town halls and government offices
  • shopping malls, shops, factories, streets and parks
  • local libraries, schools, universities and TAFEs
  • hospitals, health centres, social clubs and sports grounds
  • welfare services, community and youth centres, churches and church halls
  • galleries, cinemas, cafes and hotels.

There are resources to assist you in organising your own events on the APW website: http://www.antipovertyweek.org.au/

You don't need to get approval from APW to organise an activity. But please do register your event online here Register APW Event. Registration means we can show the politicians how many people want poverty ended. It is a key to getting the message across.

Host a MakePovertyHistory STAND UP event and be part of the world record event

STAND UP is a global initiative of MakePovertyHistory to show world leaders that vast numbers support poverty eradication measures - nearly 44 million participated in 2007, including Australian unions. We want to break that record this year!

For the third year running, the ASU National Office is staging a STAND UP event to contribute to the global total - we encourage members and friends to do the same.

Participants at these events, either publicly or privately organised, stand up together and take a pledge which is all about asking our political leaders to eradicate poverty. It can be part of your workplace morning tea or an event in itself.

You can download a toolkit below which will give you all the info you need to stage your own event.
