Pan Africa ILGA joins all our global human rights organizations and especially the Malawian organization the Center for the Development of People (CEDEP) in condemning the conviction and harsh sentencing of 14 years imprisonment with hard labour by a Magistrate Court in Blantyre, Malawi of Tiwonge ("Tionge") Chimbalanga and Steven Monjeza for "unnatural offences" and "indecent practices between males" under Sections 153 and 156 of the Malawi Penal Code.

Same sex attracted youth invited to write themselves into Australian history
Young Australians attracted to people of the same sex are being invited to ‘write themselves’ into history through a national survey. The third “Writing Themselves In” survey (WTI3) is now online will be used to gather information on the sexuality, health and wellbeing of Australians aged 14-21 who experience some form of attraction to members of their own sex (regardless of how they identify).

International Day Against Homophobia has special significance in Australia in 2008
This year, the International Day Against Homophobia (IDAHo), 17 May 2008, has special significance for everyone in Australia. “This is a historic year for Australia, with the federal government committing to implement the recommendations of HREOC’s Same-Sex: Same Entitlements report to change the 58 financial and work-related federal laws that discriminate against gay and lesbian couples and their children, as well as to change around 40 additional discriminatory laws,” said Human Rights Commissioner, Graeme Innes.

Federal Government delivers pre-election promise to same-sex couples and their families
The ALP made a commitment over five years ago to audit all parts of federal legislation to determine where discrimination occurred. Discrimination beyond financial and work-related entitlements
The Human Rights and Equal Opportunity Commission (HREOC) has stated that they intend to follow up the “Same Sex: Same Entitlements” Inquiry whose report was launched in June this year. The original inquiry focussed on areas of financial and work-related entitlements but in submissions from the LGBTI community, concerns were raised about experiences in the workplace and with health and aged care services, amongst others.

Federal laws found to breach the human rights of same sex couples
The Human Rights and Equal Opportunity Commission (HREOC) today released its “Same-Sex: Same Entitlements” report arising from its National Inquiry into Discrimination against People in Same-Sex Relationships: Financial and Work-Related Entitlements and Benefits. The report finds that although negative discrimination as a result of anomalies in federal legislation is common for people in same sex relationships, only small changes are needed to rectify this. The ASU presented both a written and verbal submission to the Inquiry which are closely addressed in the Report.

Putting the fight against HIV/AIDS firmly on the trade union agenda
A global unions programme has been launched to make the fight against HIV and AIDS a central issue for trade unions. Representatives of the global unions, the Joint United Nations Programme on HIV/AIDS (UNAIDS), the International Labour Organization (ILO) programme on HIV/AIDS and the Trade Union Advisory Committee (TUAC) discussed the prospects of the programme at a meeting on 18 May in Brussels, Belgium. The meeting was hosted by the International Confederation of Free Trade Unions (ICFTU).

The ASU National Office is coordinating an online discussion group for our GLAM people called “glamchat”. This forum will allow both officials and members across the country to “talk” to each other.
