Info Tech: Canon

Canon says NO to choice!

17 November 2009

By the ASU - the info tech industry union

ASU Delegates and Officials have told Canon in very plain terms that the majority of Technicians want to have choice in the event of a transmission of business.

What did the ASU put to Canon?

The ASU advised Canon that through its one-on-one consultation with members that their view was very strong.

ASU members acknowledged the progress that had been made in negotiations however that the issue of choice remained very important.

Canon said No!

The ASU put to Canon that there was an alternative and that was to provide protection of the entitlements of members in the event that there was a transmission. This means that they would not have a choice if they were transmitted however their potential redundancy entitlements would be placed in a trust fund and in the event that the business they transmitted to collapsed; their entitlements would be protected.

What did Canon say?

Canon thought that this was an improbable cost but they would do the figures and get back to the ASU with their response.

We are waiting for that response.

What happens now?

The ASU will pursue Canon for their response. It is expected that when Canon have responded that the agreement will be put out to vote. If you have further questions on the negotiations contact your ASU Delegate, NCC Rep or your local ASU Organiser.
