Info Tech: Canon

Canon - what are we waiting for?

02 December 2009

By the ASU - the info tech industry union

ASU Delegates and Bargaining Reps continued negotiations with Canon via teleconference on the 27 November 2009.

What did the ASU put to Canon?

The ASU advised Canon that our members' views were very strong and that choice in the event of transmission of business was a fundamental issue. We received Canon's response to our half way proposal to instead of choice, have entitlements protected in the event of a transmission. Canon said no.

We informed Canon that they should either improve the offer or put the agreement out to vote.

What did Canon say?

Canon said they would have to consider their next step and they would respond to us by Monday 30th November. They have not.

The ASU have advised Canon in writing that we believe they are delaying the finalisation of the negotiations and that the agreement should be put to the vote of Technicians for them to decide on whether the terms of the agreement are acceptable or not.

Canon have again responded with they need more time.

What happens now?

Canon have notified meetings at a number of sites but they have not scheduled any time with the negotiators.

If you attend one of these meetings you need to tell Canon exactly what you think of their delay and what you want them to do about it - either put the agreement out to vote or improve their offer.

Either way you need to be prepared to take some form of action. This means you need to be prepared to tell management exactly what you think.

ASU Delegates and Organisers will be conducting meetings in your area where you will have the opportunity to discuss what happens next and how we encourage Canon to consider your views.
