ASU supports the call for the Australian Government to maintain the stimulus spending in local government

Free our water
Last year, the ASU called for local councils throughout Australia to provide greater public access to free water facilities to encourage less dependence on water sold in plastic disposable bottles. Good regional jobs and properly funded local services will solve Australia’s regional skills shortage
The ASU recently lodged a federal submission on the issue of skills shortages in regional Australia contending that people will relocate to regional communities for jobs with good pay and conditions supported by communities with properly funded local services. These skills shortages are currently having a dire effect on local government and public services in many parts of regional Australia, resulting in a downwards spiral. This has been exacerbated by workers moving to the lucrative mining industry as a result of the current resources boom, where incentives are much more attractive. 21 May 2010 [full story]
Current HACC system in Victoria to remain until at least 2011

Gold Coast Council workers to stop work on Tuesday
Monday’s council meeting is the last chance to avert a stoppage. Confusion reigns in councils over WorkChoices while workers and communities face paying the price
Australia’s local government union, the ASU, has today questioned councils that are looking to take away the pay and entitlements of thousands of workers who serve communities through the provision of local services. Keep waste services in local government hands
The Productivity Commission has announced that although public hearings into its draft report on waste services in Australia have concluded, they will still be accepting submissions. It is very important that supporters of local government control of waste services urgently make their views known to the Commission and Treasurer Peter Costello, who originally ordered the inquiry. Service Skills Australia (the Service Industries Skills Council) is currently conducting the review of the Community Recreation, Fitness, Outdoor Recreation and Sport training packages. NSW Government sets up local government consultative committee

ASU members in sport and recreation invited to provide input on career recognition and skills improvement
The ASU has been a long supporter of skills and qualification recognition for members. It not only helps the community in many ways, but makes workplaces safer and increases career advancement, helps stop contracting-out, increases job security, helps provide quality public services and much more. ASU members in the Sport, Recreation, Tourism and Entertainment sectors are having their training packages reviewed to include a new diploma qualification in event management. Inter-Governmental Agreement recognises local governments’ rights and requirements

Child care is about quality for kids
As Australia’s largest public sector child care union, the ASU has welcomed a report by the The Australia Institute (TAI), a Canberra based research centre, on the quality of child care in Australia. Private partnership rejected by Victorian council
Victorian council, City of Greater Dandenong, had been considering a strategic service partnership with a private company. This would have led to most administrative service staff being placed in a partnership jointly run by Council and the private company. Changes to training structures for local government libraries, art galleries and museums
As expected, the CREATE ITAB (industry advisory training board) is being folded into the Innovation and Business Industry Skills Council (IBISC), which will mean that the training packages for local govt libraries, museums and art galleries will be in the hands of a new IBISC. This has occurred as a result of the Federal Government’s restructuring of the national training agenda, through the reduction of the number of ITABs to the new structure. Family Day Care workers deserve a fair go says ASU

Rates and taxes – a fair share for responsible local government
The Federal Parliament’s Inquiry into “Cost Shifting in Local Government” has published its report entitled “Rates and Taxes – A Fair Share for Responsible Local Government”. The 210 page report covers the Inquiry Committee’s views and findings, and has provided a list of 18 recommendations to the Australian Parliament, for the information of state governments, local governments and community organisations. Alice Springs Town Council employees win
Fifty indoor staff covered by the ASU (Australian Services Union) and around 60 outdoor staff covered by the LHMU (Liquor, Hospitality and Miscellaneous Workers Union) employed by the Alice Springs Town Council, have overwhelmingly supported a proposed new three year enterprise agreement. The Agreement will deliver a 10% pay rise, or no less than $63 a week extra, by Christmas 2005. Local government workers in Britain have voted to take strike action today (17 July).
