ASU members to strike in support of 'steak sandwich' workers

11 August 2009

By ASU-Victorian Authorities & Services Branch

ASU members in the City of Greater Geelong's blue-collar sector, including those working in parks and gardens, roads, networks and tip facilities, have gone on strike from normal starting time today in support of 'steak sandwich' workers Peter Anderson and Mick Van Beek.

Van Beek has been offered his job back by Council, rejecting the proposal unless the same fate applied to Anderson, who remains jobless. ASU Branch Secretary Brian Parkinson says the recent decision to strike highlights the support among workers at the Council.

"ASU members at the Council have certainly shown their support for these two men. The industrial action taken today clearly shows they believe their former employees have been harshly done by. A fortnight after Van Beek and Anderson were dismissed, our members are still adamant in their views."

"Members have resolved to report back at a 7pm meeting tonight at Geelong City Hall (prior to the Council meeting) to determine what action will be taken to further support Peter and Michael."

"The longer this issue goes on, the more it shows Council's inability to resolve this matter. Last Wednesday, the ASU put a position forward to Council to resolve the matter, but instead Council have simply exacerbated the issue. Once again, we call on the council to reinstate both Van Beek and Anderson to their former roles at the Drysdale depot."
