Optus is the latest company to use the new IR laws to sack part of its workforce and ask them to reapply for their jobs. Seventy workers will be affected across the country. Whilst the Govt has caved in after public scrutiny of its pursuit of fines from workers in Queensland who had engaged in industrial action last year. Penalty rates for weekends & public holidays threatened by new IR laws
Employers have started to use the new IR laws to abolish weekend and public holiday penalty rates for workers and this will lead to a sharp drop in take home pay for workers in the hospitality and retail industries says the ACTU. Reports in today's newspapers show that a young worker in a Juice Bar has seen her pay for a seven hour shift cut by $40 a day because her employment has shifted to an individual contract (AWA).

Youth theatre for fair wages
A group of young people from an employment program at the Interyouth Centre in Penrith protested against the Liberal parties Industrial Relations changes on Sunday 14th August. The youth group performed a street theatre play along High Street which outlined their views about the effects of the industrial relations changes on young people.

Workers meet parliamentarians in Canberra over federal govt workplace changes

SA Court Case shows how AWA’s exploit young workers and cut minimum pay
A South Australian judge has highlighted the ‘manifest disadvantage’ to a 15 year old employee of the Federal Government’s individual contracts (AWAs). The AWA paid the young woman 25% less than her minimum award entitlement.

International unions condemn Howard Government IR plans
The Union Network International [UNI], to which the ASU is affiliated, has written to the Australian Prime Minister expressing its alarm at the Howard Government’s drastic changes to workplace laws. UNI General Secretary Phillip Jennings has told the Prime Minister that the proposed changes “will place Australia in further breach of fundamental labour standards” and “would leave Australia at the bottom of OECD countries with respect to protection of basic workers’ rights”.

Changes to workplace laws
On July 1 John Howard’s government took control of the senate and got the power to pass whatever laws they like. The federal government wants to change the rules that protect workers’ jobs, pay and conditions. Young workers are more likely to be in casual and low-paid jobs and less likely to have the experience and confidence to negotiate better pay and working conditions with their employer.

The Australian Services Union has condemned the changes to Australia’s industrial relations laws announced by the Prime Minister today. ASU National Secretary Paul Slape says that the proposed laws mean that the Government will gut the Australian Industrial Relations Commission which has served workers and the wider Australian community well for 100 years.
