Your right to vote

Earlier this year, the Australian Federal Government passed the Electoral and Referendum Amendment (Electoral Integrity and Other Measures) Bill 2006, changing the electoral enrolment system. Where Australian citizens previously had a week to enrol or change their address details after the announcement of an election, the electoral roll now closes on the day the writ is issued, which for the past two elections has been the day following the election announcement.

Young people 18 - 24 years old have the lowest enrolment figure of any eligible age group. Because they are more transient and may not have been eligible to vote in a previous election, they often leave their enrolment to the very last minute. Under the new system, that will be too late - too late to have their say about who runs their country; too late to have their say about decisions that will affect their futures.

Similarly, the Federal Government's recent amendments to industrial relations laws will affect Australia's youngest workers more than any other group. With less experience in the workforce and thus less bargaining power than any other demographic, the risk of exploitation is higher for them than for anyone else.

Enter ROCK THE VOTE!

Supported by a host of Australia's top artists, ROCK THE VOTE will encourage punters to add their name to the electoral roll. The Your Rights At Work folks will also be on-site to give interested parties the full run down on how the new industrial relations laws relate to them. All this will be available to check out between sets of the following illustrious list of Australian artists.

Bonafide legends of Australian rock'n'roll, YOU AM I are ready and set to go hell for leather on the ROCK THE VOTE stage with a swag of tracks from their latest release Convicts as well as a few faves from their highly esteemed back catalogue. You haven't seen a real rock'n'roll show till you've experienced the greatness of YOU AM I live!

After fifteen years spent recording a plethora of highly memorable tunes, touring them all over the country and playing the gamut of music festivals, SPIDERBAIT released their Greatest Hits album last year and promptly found themselves with a whole new fan base of young folks discovering gems like "Buy Me A Pony" for the first time. Experience the wonder of Spiderbait at ROCK THE VOTE!

SHIHAD's trip across the Tasman, circa '93 to today's worldwide cult audience, is one of the most dogged tales in rock'n'roll. It's a story of guts and glory, stumbles and interference, awards, triumph, exhaustion and, burning through it all, a flame that's never gone out. Catch them lighting up the stage at ROCK THE VOTE.

Brisbane's very own THE BUTTERFLY EFFECT released their second studio LP, IMAGO, a few months back to rave reviews. Currently showcasing their new tunes around the nation, don't miss the distinctive melodic heavy rock sounds of The Butterfly Effect when they stop off at ROCK THE VOTE.

From Stateside, ROCK THE VOTE welcomes LYRICS BORN, founder of the seminal hip-hop collective Solesides (along with DJ Shadow and Blackalicious) Lyrics Born seamlessly blends styles and defies categorization.

Also from sunny Southern California comes PIGEON JOHN. Cutting his teeth in the early 90s at the legendary Good Life Cafe, spitting rhymes with artists like Jurassic 5, his infectious tunes have been used by XBOX for the games "Project Gotham" and "NBA Inside Drive 2002." He earned his stripes by relentless touring, making the ladies swoon and the fellas embrace their geek appeal!

Ever evolving but consistently fine, SOMA RASA's firm position at the forefront of the Australian electro/breaks scene has landed them in front of crowds of thousands at festivals and clubs across the country. Don't miss them serving it up to their home crowd.

Think of the RESIN DOGS and images of huge crowds taken away by infectious rhythms instantly come to mind. For the past year they've been playing all over the world, from the Sziget Festival in Hungary to Cork in the Republic of Ireland and the Roxy on Sunset Boulevard, Los Angeles. In November they'll be home to turn it on for the teamsters at ROCK THE VOTE.

Best to be wearing a pair of solid toe shoes if you venture near Australian act ACE's performance at ROCK THE VOTE, because you'll be doing some serious toe tapping! Their recent release Breakfast Shift is a patchwork of musical nostalgia, spanning the 1950s to the 1970s. Make sure you check out their lovely spread of very hummable tunes!

Multiple appearances at the Big Day Out, Vibes On A Summers Day and a host of other festivals plus tours with 50 Cent, Missy Elliott, Run DMC, De La Soul, Black Eyed Peas, Jungle Brothers, Grandmaster Flash, Jurrasic 5 and long list of other esteemed acts are testament to DJ NICK TOTH's ability to turn it on live!

And finally, Brisbane's own DJ SAMPOLOGY will be on hand to get everyone jumping with his very own mix of hiphop, funk, Breakbeat, Disco, good quality House, Drum and Bass and whatever happens to take his fancy on November 18!

YOU AM I, SPIDERBAIT, SHIHAD, THE BUTTERFLY EFFECT, LYRICS BORN, PIGEON JOHN, SOMA RASA, RESIN DOGS, ACE, DJ NICK TOTH, DJ SAMPOLOGY plus more to be announced.
