Organising Globally - Building Union Power

09 October 2006

ASU members in Road Transport around the country will use the ITF Week of Action: Organising Globally - Building Union Power, to finalise preparations for our national action day on 9 November 2006.

The ASU is an affiliate of the International Transport Workers' Federation (ITF). The ITF campaign is focused on activities in TNT, DHL, FedEx and UPS and, here in Australia, also on TOLL.

This week of action is to raise awareness of the international campaign and for ASU delegates and members to plan what activities they will engage in on November 9.

Organising Globally - Fighting for Our Rights on November 9

November 9 has been flagged as a special day of action for road transport industry workers with the ITF coming together with another international union - Union Network International. (UNI), which has a strong focus on call centres, information technology workers and other areas where many of our ASU members in road transport work. Activities will also be occurring in the aviation industry.

These events will be international and while you may have morning tea in Dubbo or Avalon to celebrate the day, you can be sure that unionists all over the globe will be doing the same thing.

Why should you get involved?

Recognising that the company you work for is part of an international movement of solidarity for unionists and that workers are crossing borders and working globally in an effort to address issues within these companies is very exciting.

What can you do?

Your organiser will have posters, information flyers, and a motion of support for you and your co-workers to endorse.

You could hold a morning tea on November 9 to discuss the issues and the motion

You can make sure a copy of the Organising Globally - Fighting for Our Rights poster is on your union notice board.

You can also go to the ITF website to see the work which is being done in TNT and DHL to further increase the strengthen workers connections internationally: http://www.itfglobal.org/campaigns/integrators
