ASU launches social inclusion discussion paper

04 May 2007

Last week Deputy Opposition Leader Julia Gillard launched the ASU's discussion paper titled 'Building Social Inclusion in Australia - priorities for the social and community services sector workforce'.

The Australian Services Union is the largest union working in the social and community services sector, a sector that employs hundreds of thousands of Australians. The ASU prepared this research as a starting point for further community and sector consultation about the issues that confront social and community services sector workers.

The ASU believes that the provision of adequate and appropriate social and community services is critical to Australia's social cohesion and the development of a fair and equitable society.

Speakers at the ASU's launch included ACTU President Sharan Burrow, ASU Assistant National Secretary Linda White, Northern Rivers Social Development Council President Jenny Dowell and ACOSS Executive Director Andrew Johnson.

You can download Julia Gillard's speech and the speech by Linda White below. The ASU's discussion paper can also be downloaded below. Alternatively, if you would like a hard copy of our discussion paper, please email Luke Cherry lcherry@asu.asn.au at the ASU National Office with your request and postal address.

Further community and sector consultation will commence shortly so watch out for details in your local area, or send us an email on your thoughts about our discussion paper.

ALP Conference recognises SACS workers

ASU representatives at the recent ALP National Conference were also instrumental in proposing amendments to the Party's Platform and proposing a resolution about social and community service workers.

Check out the Platform amendments and our resolution accepted at the conference for the sector here.
