State-wide power stoppage in Queensland today
After the overwhelming success of the statewide 24 hour stop work protest in Queensland's power industry on May 14th, the ASU has lodged another notice with Energex, Ergon and Powerlink to inform them that the next 24-hour stop work protest will be held on Wednesday 21st May. And the combined power unions intend to continue industrial action until the power corporations and the State Government start taking the current round of EBA negotiations seriously. 21 May 2008 [full story]
Qld power industry day of action coming this Wednesday 14th May
Members employed by Ergon, Energex and Powerlink will be holding a 24-hour strike from 6:00am this coming Wednesday 14th May 2008 to 6:00am the next morning. The purpose of the strike is to alert the power companies and the State Government (their owner) that their current offer of a 4.3% wage increase is unacceptable (the State's own CPI is 4.8%!) and that attempts to reduce safety are equally unacceptable. Ergon Energy staff to stop work tomorrow - pay offer not good enough
Australian Services Union Queensland Services Branch (ASU-Services) members at Queensland’s regional electricity distributor, Ergon Energy, will stop work for twenty-four hours tomorrow morning (Wednesday 30, April 2008) in the Rockhampton and Townsville Control Rooms as part of their campaign to secure a better pay and conditions agreement with Ergon. 29 April 2008 [full story]

Ergon members to go on strike

It is official: TRUenergy is the first electricity company to try sending Australian jobs to India
Yesterday morning, TRUenergy workers were told that their worst fears would be realised. The Credit, Billing, IT and registration management functions of the business will be outsourced to IBM. The majority of roles will be sent to India, with a few being outsourced locally. This means that 200 workers will lose their jobs and another 66 must move to IBM, but there is worse to come. 01 May 2007 [full story]

Energy unions need to be consulted on Stern report findings
With the release of the Stern report to the UK Government on the effects of climate change on the world economy came the word that the Australian Government was advised of the report earlier this month. AGL to slash SA workforce
In yet another indictment of the privatisation of South Australia's electricity industry AGL have today advised their SA based employees of their plans to cut 200 jobs or over 50% of their SA based workforce over the next 12 months. Tasmanian Minister for Energy tells ASU privatisation a poor investment
The ASU National Energy/Electricity Division along with Tasmanian rank and file energy committee members met in Hobart recently. Comprehensive report on energy industry confirms under-resourcing and skills shortages
The most critical statement on the Australian energy industry for many years has now been completed. The study was undertaken as an industry project involving the ASU and other industry unions, and was conducted by the joint industry training and skills organisation, EE-Oz Training Standards. The report confirms the ASU position that the industry in under-resourced and the skills shortages need to be urgently addressed. The report also confirms the ASU position that skills shortages are across the whole industry, and that resolving them needs to include the employment of administrative support staff, professional, paraprofessional, non trades, and trades workers. 27 April 2006 [full story]

ASU protects jobs and conditions in Tasmania
Over the last few months Tasmanian ASU delegates have been participating in an extensive restructuring of the Tasmanian Hydro Corporation. Agreement has been reached with management that there will be no forced redundancies and any redeployment will only be through negotiation. ASU sends delegation to World Energy Congress
From September 5-9, 2004, the World Energy Congress will hold its tri-annual conference in Sydney. The conference will be attended by representatives from all major energy companies, state-owned corporations and a large number of energy ministers from countries across the globe. ASU continues the push for more energy skills and workers – now in Queensland

Campaigning against electricity skills and staff shortages
This week the ASU Skills, Competency and Electricity Industry Campaign rolled out, with its first high level meeting with the Victorian Government. The campaign is seeking to raise the concerns of ASU members at the current levels of staffing in the electricity industry Australia wide and to highlight the need to train and employ staff over a wide range of classifications throughout the industry. 16 July 2004 [full story]

The ASU is campaigning to increase the skills of electricity industry workers and to increase the number of workers in the electricity industry. Korean Unions Look to ASU for Advice
The ASU was recently approached by the Korean Labour Institute, and the Korean Government Electricity taskforce, that are investigating reform of the Korean Electricity system, after the election of a now more “worker focused” Government , than its predecessor. Electricity now a national industry
ASU Assistant National Secretary, Greg McLean, has met with ALP Shadow Minister for Resources, Joel Fitzgibbon, to put forward the ASU position with regard to the electricity industry.
