Dead in the Water: the dangers of water privatisation

29 April 2010

By ASU NSW & ACT (Services) Branch

The ASU has just released a new report into the dangers of water privatisation. The paper, "Dead in the Water: the dangers of water privatisation", can be downloaded below.

Around the world communities are fighting back against the impact that privatisation has had on local communities.

It is ironic that at the very time at which most nations are saying enough, here in NSW we face the prospect of a new Government wanting to privatise our water services and much, much more.

Sydney is rightly proud of its clean beaches and the quality of its drinking water. If you have travelled a bit, even just to South Australia, then you will know that clean drinking water is not to be taken for granted. In many cities across the world it is not possible to turn on the tap at home and drink the water.

We must protect our clean drinking water and our unique beaches; these are part of the fabric of our society and one of the many things that makes our city so attractive to interstate and international visitors.

This paper sounds a warning bell for us all.

This paper puts us on notice as to the consequences of water privatisation. Before the voters of NSW go to the polls they must know where each political party stands on the issue of water privatisation because the health of their drinking water depends on it.

The ASU acknowledges the work of Dr Particia Ranald, from the ACTU Organising Education and Campaign Centre for her great work in writing this paper.
