What is the ASU
The Australian Services Union has more than 120,000 members across Australia employed in a range of service related industries. We are the Union for Australia's fastest growing industries including call centres, labour hire firms and the non-Government community services sector.
It doesn't matter whether you are permanent, fulltime, part-time, casual, on a contract or a short-term temporary employee - the ASU is the Union for you
Get organised and get a better deal
Unions exist because you are not in an equal bargaining position with your employer. You don't have a human resources department or expensive lawyers to advise you. However, you can join together with your co-workers in a Union that gives you collective strength ad bargaining power.
This is particularly important at a time when your rights at work and your conditions of employment are under attack. It is only because of the union movement that workers enjoy paid annual leave, sick leave, superannuation, parental leave, long service leave and paid overtime. Employers and conservative Governments opposed all these things. They are still under attack and in some cases are being taken away. Only you and your co-workers can stop this and becoming a Union member is the first step.
At the ASU our members are the Union. Being in a union is not about a Union official telling you what to do - it is about a group of unionised workers making decisions about their workplace and their future with the advise and support of an effective Union office.
History shows us that collective strength does work. By joining together in a Union with your co-workers and actively participating in your Union you can make a real difference.
The ASU encourages active participation of its members and most branches have a range of networks and committees for active members, which are informal and enjoyable such as:
- Energy Industry Network
- Women's Forum
- GLAM (Gay and Lesbian ASU Members) Network
- Branch Committee of Management
As we are in the process of rebuilding NQ C&A Branch we are constantly seeking out members who wish to become involved in forming local committies such as the above.
We encourage active participation of members in the Union's decision making process. After all, it's your Union.
It is equally important for all members to have a Workplace Delegate as it enables:
- direct distribution of information to members
- Organisation of regular meetings to discuss workplace issues
- Sympathetic shoulder to air grievances
- And many more
If you are interested in becoming a Delegate or forming a committee please contact the office on 07 4771 2873.
Statistics show that working in an organised, unionised workplace means you will have better pay and improved working conditions. These benefits are achieved through the collective strength and bargaining power of the Union.
The Union also provides members with advice, information and representation on a range of issues including:
- Award entitlements and changes
- Correct classification and relates of pay
- Disciplinary matters including unfair dismissal
- Information about contracts
- Occupational health and safety
- Parental leave
- Equal opportunity and sexual harassment

The ASU NQ C&A also offers additional services to members including access to:
