working to make your workplace a better place. The ASU includes people like
you who want to defend and improve their working conditions. You are among
people who want to maintain a decent standard of living for themselves, their
families and their community. The key to this aspiration is that we do better
when we work together. Together we can improve your work place, our industry
and our community. The Australian Services Union is a
non-profit industrial organisation that currently covers approx 170,000
members nationwide in areas including Local Government, Energy, Social and
Community Services, Childcare, Information Technology, Tourism and Travel.
The ASU also covers Clerical and Administration workers in private industries
eg. Real Estate, Airlines, Road Transport, Shipping, Credit Unions, the
Retail sector, Small Business, Legal and Professional Offices and Call
Centres. The ASU is one of a kind - The Tasmanian Branch of the ASU has a
dedicated team of experienced and expert staff working for members in Local
Government who will assist you with most issues when they may arise at your
work place. Why Join the ASU?Employees are often unaware of their rights
in the workplace or how to go about protecting their jobs and working
conditions. They may lack the confidence to stand up to
their bosses who are often supported by their own ‘unions’ such as the
Tasmanian Chamber of Commerce and Industry (TCCI). The ASU works closely with the Tasmanian
Trades and Labor Council (Unions Tasmania) on industrial campaigns and other
award matters. As a Financial Member of the ASU, you can
obtain help with any query or difficulty arising from your employment. The ASU can inform you of your rights and
help you to protect and improve your working conditions. Through membership
of the ASU you will have access to a range of services including advice,
information and representation in relation to the following: Award Entitlements: The ASU represents members in the
Australian Industrial Relations Commission on matter such as underpayment of
wages, incorrect Award classifications, termination entitlements etc. Workers Compensation/Occupational Health
and Safety: The ASU
advises and represents members directly with their employer and in the
Workers Compensation Commission. Note: some claims can be very complex e.g.
workplace injuries. Contact the Equal Opportunity and Sexual Harassment: Unfair Dismissal: The ASU handles many cases of unfair
dismissal each year. Generally we obtain a better outcome, with no costs to
the member, than those who run their own case with legal representation. There
are no fees other than Union membership, provided you are a member before you
are dismissed. Individual Grievances / Disputes: If you have any concerns about your
workplace such as disputes with senior members of staff, work overload or
potential redundancy you should contact your ASU workplace representative or
a member of your Local Government Team as soon as possible. Parental leave: The ASU has achieved unpaid Parental
Leave and paid Family Leave in Awards. We have also achieved paid Maternity
Leave in some Councils. Long Service Leave: Long Service Leave in Local Government is
available after 10 years service. Disputes over entitlements after 7 years
can be taken up by the ASU. |
