Transport and travel industries are an integral part of the broader Australian network including Airlines in which the ASU has a long and proud history.
ASU members organise their workplaces to improve:
- Collective Bargaining
- Occupational Health and Safety (OH&S)
- Work and Family Balance
- Industry Standards
The ASU also participates in the global collective. Global activity in transport and travel occurs though the ASU being affiliated to international unions such as the ITF (International Transport Federation) and UNI (Union Network International). These alliances help build links with all of the unions across these industries to maintain the best collective approach to improving our workplaces.
Public/Private Rail & Bus industry
Assistant National Secretary Greg McLean oversees ASU work in this sector (part of the Public Sector Team), which incorporates members in the Rail and Bus industries (traditionally "public transport", but now including privatised entities). Road Transport industry

The ASU is affiliated to the ITF which is running a global HIV/AIDS project. HIV/AIDS is of particular concern to transport workers. Mobility and long absences from home make transport workers vulnerable. The ITF is helping to combat HIV/AIDS by raising awareness. The ITF publish a HIV/AIDS fortnightly eBulletin which we recommend road transport members have a look at.

The aim of the Global Delivery Network is to focus on building solidarity and developing a global organising strategy targeting workers in the world's four largest logistics firms - DHL, TNT, UPS and Fedex - and in CEVA, which used to be a part of TNT.
