ASU Women

Don't be too polite girls!

2009 is shaping as the year of change for working women across Australia.

Long term campaigns for the improvement of women's working wages and conditions, including pay equity and paid parental leave, are drawing to conclusion.

Pay Equity

While we wait (not quietly) for these outcomes, women continue to face ongoing inequities in their wages in areas directly comparable to that of men's work.

The Federal Government has been conducting the House of Representatives Employment and Workplace Committee Inquiry into pay Equity and Associated Issues. You can go directly to the Committee Inquiry site http://www.aph.gov.au/house/committee/ewr/payequity/index.htm At that website you will be able to access the myriad of written submissions to the Committee.

The Committee is currently conducting hearings around the country with the ASU set to present our oral submission on the 31 March 2009 in Brisbane. Stay tuned for more news on how you get involved on the day.

Paid Maternity Leave

Paid maternity leave has hit the headlines at last with the focus on convincing the Federal Government to include paid maternity leave in the 2009 federal budget!

The ASU has joined with the ACTU in supporting the Productivity Commission Draft Report "Paid Parental Leave - Support for Parents with Newborn Children" and our support included a number of improvements.

The campaign continues now that the Productivity Commission has presented their final report to the Federal Government. Once the Report has been tabled, it is up to the Government to determine when it will be released to the public.

One of the ways you can continue to participate in the campaign is to view the first version of the Paid Maternity Leave Digital Video Petition which has been built over a number of months by the ACTU. There are many ASU members with starring roles in the video. One of the best ways we can help keep the pressure on is by sending the Paid Maternity Leave Digital Video Petition to your local federal Member of Parliament: http://www.rightsatwork.com.au/campaigns/pmlpetitionaction

Please share this action with your friends, family and co-workers so they can help keep the pressure up too. You can also contribute your own picture or video by following the notes here: http://www.rightsatwork.com.au/paidmaternityleave

ASU women have their say in 2009

The Don't Be Too Polite Girls "Tell us what you really think" survey has closed. A detailed analysis is being prepared by the National Women's Consultative Committee (NWCC).

The survey results tell us what you really think and we look forward to presenting you with the final analysis. In the meantime here is a snapshot of what ASU women around the country have had to say about their work, their activism, their community and their union.

The NWCC is a committee of women who represent each Branch of the ASU. If you wish to be active in your Branch and participate in the Branch Women's Committee or organising in your workplace you should contact your NWCC representative and their details are listed below.
