Call centre health and safety guide now available

13 April 2004

A brand new guide to help improve occupational health and safety in call centres has recently been launched by the ASU after extensive trialling in a number of call centres.

The "Good Practice Guide for Occupational Health and Safety in Call Centres" is part of the call centre health and safety project conducted by the ASU's Victorian Private Sector Branch and commissioned by the Victorian Government's Safety Development Fund Unit of Workplace Victoria.

Many health and safety reps in call centres in Victoria participated in the trial of the guide so that we can make call centres safe places to work.

What is the guide?

The guide is a resource for call centre health and safety representatives, employees, employers and industry representatives on how to achieve best practice in call centre health and safety.

It includes a checklist to measure standards in call centres and while not binding on employers it gives employees a useful tool to ensure their workplace can be as safe as possible.

What does the guide cover?

The guide looks at the following issues:

  • Employee health and safety representation and consultation
  • Hazard Identification, Risk Assessment and Control Measures
  • Call Monitoring
  • Environmental Design
  • Acoustic Shock
  • Occupational Stress
  • Visual and Voice Fatigue
  • Work Organisation (organisational demands, targets, performance appraisals)
  • Manual tasks in the call centre industry
  • Bullying in the workplace

Want a copy?

A copy of the guide can be downloaded below or for a hard copy contact Alen Clifford at the ASU Victorian Private Sector Branch on 03 9320 6700 or e-mail info@asupsvic.org.
