Referendum on local government recognition delayed

06 August 2013 By ASU

LG-referendum-logo400pxwWith the announcement of the federal election on 7 September, plans for the referendum for the Constitutional recognition of local government have been put on hold. The referendum cannot be held at the same time as the 7 September election because the required notice period will not have elapsed.

The Federal Government has, however, reasserted its commitment to holding the referendum, with a date to be announced in the future.

The ASU will continue to campaign for a YES vote in the referendum because of the importance of supporting local government funding.

As soon as a date is announced for the referendum, the ASU will advise members and supporters.
