Australians will soon be asked if there should be constitutional recognition of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people. This referendum is about one simple and practical thing we can do that will deliver real results to improve the lives of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people.
After over 65,000 years of continuous culture, it’s time Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people are recognised in our 122-year-old Constitution.
Workers know that when their employer listens to them, better decisions are made – workplaces are safer and fairer. Government will make better decisions about issues that affect Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people if they listen to them first.
The Uluru Statement from the Heart is a call by Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people for real and practical change in Australia through the establishment of a constitutionally enshrined Voice to Parliament.
A referendum is needed to change Australia’s Constitution.
It’s an important change that will make Australia fairer and better – and the Australian Services Union is proud to be campaigning in support of a Yes vote in the upcoming referendum.
The Voice to Parliament is a natural reflection of this principle of union values of consultation and collective voice. Enshrining a Voice to the constitution will enable Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people to provide advice to the Parliament on policies and projects that impact their lives.
So as unionists, we are proud to stand in solidarity with our Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander brothers and sisters in demanding this change.
