Three Senate votes needed to save our rights at work – act now

11 September 2014 By ACTU & ASU

The Federal Government wants to change the Fair Work Act as part of its crusade to reduce working people's living standards by destroying your rights at work. We cannot let them win! The Senate vote on the Bill was delayed so we have a short time to act and make a difference.

email-crossbench-senators800pxwWhen we started this as an urgent campaign less than two weeks ago, ASU supporters sprang to action, and the Senate vote originally to be held on 3 September was delayed. We need everyone to mobilise again in the lead up to the rescheduled vote which we expect in the week beginning 22 September.

Labor and Green Senators have already committed to voting against this attack on Australian workers. Now the fate of Tony Abbott's anti-worker laws depends on the votes of eight crossbench Senators. The good news is we only need to convince three of them to vote against these changes to stop Abbott in his tracks.

Across the country, hundreds of thousands of people know what it is like to be left powerless at work - to have our rights and protections stripped away. To win the Senators votes we have two hugely powerful tools - our numbers and our stories. That's why we're asking our supporters to 'adopt a Senator' - call, email and write to a decision maker - and make the case for why they should stand with workers.

We've seen what happens when government strips away protections from workers. We've witnessed the harm caused by open-slather individual contracts that strip away weekend rates, overtime and public holidays. We know all too well that safety is compromised and exploitation runs rampant when people are denied access to union representation at work.

We cannot afford to go back to the bad old days. We can't let Abbott win on these changes.

Find a Senator in your state from the list, get in touch by phone, by mail, by email, and by social media and ask them to vote NO when the Fair Work Amendment Bill comes before the Senate again in the week beginning 22 September.

We face a calculating and ideologically driven Government that is rolling out attack after attack on Australian families. History shows us that when we stick together and fight for what we believe in then fairness usually wins out. That's what our movement is all about.

And please spread the word to other supporters of workers' rights by sharing this item with your friends, family and colleagues.

Please "Like" and "Share" or "Retweet" our campaign content on social media to get the message as far around the country as possible – these simple actions are very powerful!
